From the Mouths of Babes

Princess: "Look! I found a whole dollar in my bank!"

Sugar and Spice: "We can go to Paris and see that tall thing over there."

Princess: "It's called a tower. And I think we will need two dollars. One for you and one for me."

Dear Thunder and Lightning Storm

Really??? It wasn't enough that I am home alone, tired but not able to sleep. You had to roll in and light up the night and shake the windows pushing sleep even further away. That's alright, I can always sleep tomorrow.

11:55 And while you're at it bring on the torrential rain.

1:25 And just for good measure throw in a very noisy cricket somewhere in my bedroom.

MRI update

Yesterday was My Little Reader's MRI. She was such a trooper. No one told us before hand that she was going to need an IV. That was not a fun surprise at all. The needle scared MLR and it hurt, too. After she calmed down they prepared her for the test. She got earphones and was settled onto the table. They strapped a band across her head to help her keep still and slid her in. She did such a good job. She tried so hard to be still, but every once in a while you could see she was on the verge of crying again. At some point the technician called in the radiologist to review the pictures. It was decided that even though she had been so still, it was not still enough. So, they made the decision to sedate her. After the first 10cc were given you could see that she was getting sleepy. But suddenly she got agitated and said that her arm was bleeding. They checked the IV and sure enough it was leaking the sedative. Drats. They gave her a total of 30cc more over the course of maybe 10 minutes. She tried so hard to go to sleep. When they thought she was finally out they strapped her down and slid her back in the machine. Unfortunately, as soon as she was all the way in she tried to turn sideways, like she normally sleeps. The doctor and nurse decided that she wasn't going to be sedated enough and decided to end the test.

Unfortunately, that means we get to do it all again. MLR was so cranky and emotional waking up. She was also incredibly hungry, poor kid. As promised we took her to BJ's for lunch, but she slept through the whole thing. She is pretty unhappy about having another MRI, mostly about having to get another needle. I was hoping beyond hope that when they repeated the MRI they would give her the other IV sedative that the nurse had discussed with us, but as it turns out they have decided on general anesthesia which will require that she is intubated. I am assured that this will be easier on her and that it will ensure that we won't need to schedule a 3rd MRI. My Little Reader was still pretty sad about the whole thing last night.

I wanted to be sure that she understood that we would be doing the test again to help prepare her. She is scared of having another needle. I asked her a bunch of times yesterday if she wanted a blessing from her daddy, both before and after the IV. She insisted that she was fine. However, last night while we were talking about doing the test over I asked her again and with tiny little tears running down her face she said she needed a blessing. I asked her who should give her the blessing and she declared Big Opa. So Sunday we are heading to Mesa for a special blessing from her Opa. She tells me that she knows the second time will be easier because Opa will say a special prayer. How can you not just love the faith of children?

My girl can eat

My Little Reader is preparing
for her 12 hour fast
with full abandon.

Since dinner
(a full bowl of pasta, peas, and chicken)
she has inhaled...

1 handful of banana chips
1 strawberry Nutri-grain bar
2 cinnamon pop tarts
1 slice of cheese
1 glass of juice
and
1 granola bar

I think she might finally be approaching full.
Hopefully,
it will hold her over until the test is over tomorrow.
Hopefully,
it will also not make her sick tonight.

My Little Reader's MRI

Date and time set. When they called yesterday the girl told me not until the 30th. That was not going to fly with this mommy. Lucky for her she called back today. MRI Thursday, UMC @ 1pm. The poor kid can't have anything to eat for 8 hours prior to the test. I will be fasting with her. Maybe you will too? We will have to wait on official results from the Doctor. Hopefully, I will know by Friday. Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers.

First Monsoon

Well, the storm I have been waiting for finally hit. Bigger than it was supposed to I might add. Sideways rain, hail, couldn't see the neighbor's house. Now that the dust has settled we have an overturned BBQ, a broken picnic table, rain puddles inside the front door, and water dripping down the windows in the play room. It seems to be over now, but there sure is a lot of lightning and thunder still. When it does pass I will be checking the stucco. I can see chunks missing from the house behind us. And apparently the roof tiles. Oops, spoke to soon...sideways rain is back!

Dear Summer...

Where have you gone? I had such great plans for you and now I feel you slipping through my fingers. Only 8 more lazy days. But they won't be lazy, will they? 8 days to fit in a summer's worth of plans. We still have movies to see, museums to play in, friends to visit, ice cream to eat, pools to swim in, stories to read, picnics to have. On the more practical side there are still closets to organize, walls to paint, boxes to unpack, weight to lose. Today the kids are quietly playing together and I am facing a mountain of laundry and a good movie. This morning there was no rush to eat breakfast, get dressed, hair done, lunches made, gather up a days worth of needs, and out the door by 6:35. Today there were morning cartoons and snuggling. A lazy breakfast. Kids still in jammies. Summer, I am not ready for you to be over. I am not ready for the stress of a new school year, for cranky mornings, and tired evenings. Next year I promise to make the most of you. To stay put and just enjoy. Until then, we will hope for some awesome Saturdays.

No Sleep in Sight

The wee hours of the night are upon me and I can't sleep. I have been tired all day and sore from moving things around my classroom yesterday. My body is done for the day, but each time I close my eyes a new nightmare hits me square in the face. In the still of the night with all other distractions aside I beg and plead that whatever this is that it is nothing. I have never wanted nothing as much as I want it now. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Please be nothing.

The Place in Between...or Fear of the Unknown

The back-story: A few weeks ago we visited Ben's family in Mesa. We stayed for a few days and then headed home. Somewhere in the mix My Little Reader's glasses went MIA. We looked everywhere and then planned to replace them, but other life events got in the way. During that time I noticed that her left eye was wandering and that she was having trouble focusing with that eye. We had her patch her "good" eye to help force the other one to focus.

Last Thursday we finally had a spare minute and took her to get a new prescription. Ah, but if only it had been that simple. The ophthalmologist told us that she basically has no vision in her left eye. She can see shapes and colors but can barely make out a huge letter (seriously like 12 inches tall) from across the room. He told us that her pressure reading was too high and that it appeared her optic nerve had atrophied. There was more medical mumbo-jumbo, but the outcome was that we need to take her to a specialist.

Yesterday we went to the specialist. I wish that I had more answers. But I don't. He confirmed what the first doctor had said, but still didn't have a reason for the problem. So he ordered an MRI for next week. He also threw in the extra reminder that for the rest of her life My Little Reader will have to be extra careful with her right eye, because she no longer has a back-up. Thanks, no pressure.

So that is where you find me today. At the place in between. In between knowing that something is not right with her eye and knowing what that something is. The place where I pray it is simply something she was born with and the place where I fear beyond words that it is something far more sinister. In this space in between I watch her differently. I notice her clinginess and wonder at the reason for it. I see her crankiness and question if it is simply a 7-year-old thing or if there is something bigger at work. Ben and my mom and My Little Reader's kindergarten teacher assure me that since her eye has always been different and since nothing else is different about her it is probably nothing. But what if it is not. I would rather prepare for the worst and be relieved to find I worried for nothing than to have the wind knocked out of me by something I haven't begun to prepare for.

Every week we go to the Harkins Summer Movies for kids. Last week the movie was Planet 51. At one point in the movie a very keen little boy tells a man, "You are not afraid "of such and such". You are afraid of the unknown." I couldn't have said it better. I am fearful beyond words that whatever this thing is I won't be able to fix it. It is amazing how quickly your worst case scenario evolves. Last Thursday I was grasping for any chance that she might one day regain some of her sight in the left eye. Now, I am beyond that. Not that I don't still hope that medical marvels will occur in her lifetime. But now I sit with a constant prayer on my lips that there is nothing in her brain that is causing this change in her eye. A constant ache in my heart at what it might be and a sliver of hope that we have already seen the worst.

Last week my heart broke at the thought that she couldn't see out of that eye, and now I pray that is all that it is. Amazing that something that intially was so scary would now be a great blessing. So, if you would, say a little prayer for her...and for me.
